Objectives

The railway sector is currently acting in a fragmented way and in silos corresponding most often to physical or functional subsystems or use cases, and the different owners/managers of the overall infrastructure at regional/national level, without global extensive view or full control of the global system involved by rail operations.

With the progress of digitization, analogue devices based on relays were progressively substituted by digital ones, and it is more and more evident that enabling the communication between already existing digital tools for various subsystems can be beneficial. What is missing is an efficient, automated and standardized way for these integrated and interplaying systems to act as one ecosystem: sharing, integrating, identifying, correlating and exploiting the right data at the right time.

In order to meet these challenges, the objective of LinX4Rail is to develop and promote a common Functional Rail System Architecture for the Rail sector, as requested by EC. It will be supported by a widely adopted Shift2Rail Conceptual Data Model (CDM) that will, with the commitment of the Shift2Rail members, establish the standard for interactions between legacy and new systems, thus ensuring sustainable interoperability between systems.

The ambition of LinX4Rail is to achieve a comprehensive approach for the CDM, as a models’ federation, global system modelling specification and the strategy for implementation of technological breakthroughs.

Description of objectives - WHAT?

Expected main OUTPUTs

Challenge

Link with the WP
Build a Common Rail Dictionary (object model library), in collaboration with current initiatives (IFC Rail, EULYNX, RTM, railML, Ontorail). A common formal Rail Dictionary, suitable for use by concerned experts and by applications. The challenge is to reach a consensus with all the existing initiatives about the same understanding of terms. A common formal rail dictionary must cope with numerous terms that may be context-sensitive (esp. in signalling and operations). The challenge is to reach a consensus with all the existing initiatives about the same understanding of terms. 2, 5
S2R-CDM Modelling design Unified hierarchical and modular structure and data model. Continuous evolution and enrichment of CDM according to other S2R project requirements. 3
Proof of concept through at least 3 use cases
  • Analyse a selection of use cases groups to identify the need and from each use case derive:
    • the requirements on each system/sub-system: Objects and properties (semantics, ontologies, relations, …);
    • related performance indicators;
  • Analyse the technical modelling principles and methods for best practice and derive requirements.
Set up Key Performance Indicators (KPI) and prove the impact of use of CDM
  • Synchronize the use case with other domain models for joint understanding of data model / data exchange issue;
  • Design the CDM data model based on the use-case in accordance with defined design patterns;
  • Implement the model and perform a proof-of-concept demonstrator;
  • Verify & validate the CDM core model against the use cases.
4
Strategy for implementation of technological breakthroughs (including RCA)
  • Road map for implementationof technological breakthroughs;
  • Recommendations for the governance.
  • Integration of ongoing initiatives and future ones;
  • Agreement of each railway actor;
  • Time to set up standardisation.

Project Structure

The technical work is structured around 5 work packages, aiming at:

  • Putting a “railway semantic dictionary” at disposal of all stakeholders, with the functionalities that are necessary to fulfill the above aims and requirements.
  • Creating a Conceptual Data Model (CDM) specification and formal definitions covering modelling requirements from S2R projects and external initiatives.
  • Developing three use cases in order test and refine the proposed CDM solution, and to prove the applicability.
  • Developing a vision and concepts for a common Rail Functional System Architecture, combining top-down and bottom-up approaches: starting from ongoing initiatives inside and outside Shift2Rail, producing successive releases of the Architecture and integrating it into Shift2Rail initiatives by triggering and carrying out a change management process.

WP01 - Management of project, coordination with other projects and IPs

WP02 - Definition of common data dictionary (Semantics, Ontologies)

The objectives of the work package are:

  • Development of the definition of concepts and their semantic, that can be used by other dictionaries, ontologies, data repositories, applications;
  • Integration of output coming from previous works or similar projects to update the dictionary.

WP03 - CDM/ global system modeling specification & development

  • Creation of S2R-CDM (Conceptual Data Model) as a consistent federation of data railway system models, based on existing ones coming from RTM, EULYNX, railML and IFC.Rail and not only railway related ones, such as the ones from the OGC Sensor Web Enablement suite for the diagnostic data and processes and so on.
  • Evolution and enrichment of CDM according to other S2R project requirements.

WP04 - CDM Demonstration

  • Development of three demonstrators in order to test and refine the proposed CDM solution, and to prove the applicability to other S2R projects on which the WP3 work has been based.
  • Definition of the quality indicators and consequent evaluation of the performances of concepts proposed with respect to the developed use cases.

WP05 - Strategy for implementation of technological breakthroughs (including RCA)

This WP will work on a first comprehensive architecture, mapping the technologies for the implementation of a new integrated railway system approach.
In order to do so, we will develop a vision and concepts for a Functional Railway System Architecture
  • from ongoing initiatives inside Shift2Rail
  • from RCA, OCORA and other rail initiatives (e.g. IFC, RTM, …)
  • from benchmark from other sectors

This WP will produce successive releases of the common Functional Railway System Architecture and will integrate it into Shift2Rail carrying out the change management process.

This structure aims at streamlining the inputs (“subjects”) from running projects and other initiatives outside Shift2Rail and analysing them. The Programme Board will approve or not the proposed subjects. LinX4Rail will provide specification requests, the projects will execute the technical impact assessment. LinX4Rail will present the technical impact assessment to the Programme Board. Based on the recommendations, the decision of an integration into the project is taken at the Programme Board level.

Deliverable publication D5.7 “Interim report on governance and deployment strategy"

This document proposes to capitalise examples of industrial architectures and provide first foundation for setting up shared principles on the governance of the European railway system architecture and conceptual model developed in LinX4Rail-1 project. The objective is to complement the technical reports prepared in LinX4Rail prepared in LinX4Rail WP5 for the European railway system architecture and LinX4Rail-1 WP2, WP3 and WP4 for the Common Data Model (CDM) and put it into a dynamic perspective with governance considerations. The principle proposed in this document can be already implemented, as much as possible, in the governance of LinX4Rail project (e.g. task 5.2 is now open to sector participants outside the LinX4Rail consortium), and more extensively through the implementation of the System Pillar envisaged for Europe’s Rail JU.

The work on the governance and deployment strategy of the European railway system architecture and CDM will be pursue in the LinX4Rail-2 project.

You will be able to consult the deliverable D5.7 by clicking here.

Deliverable publication D5.3 "First release of the system functional architecture"

This document sets up the very first basics of the European Railway Architecture, developed within the LinX4Rail Project WP5. The architecture approach presented here has been developed over 2020 through 15 workshops. A basic framework is now stabilised and should allow for iterative releases, enabling to progressively refine the architecture.

A first iteration of LinX4Rail architecture views is proposed, establishing first relations between services, operations and resources involved in the railway system.
Constraints and opportunities for the architecture design are captured. The objectives of the Architecture are introduced, from which main design criteria are developed. The Architecture must support more performance and coherence in a service-oriented approach. It should allow for modularity, decoupling, upgradability, ability to migrate, interoperability...

You will be able to consult the deliverable D5.3 by clicking here.

2nd LinX4Rail Advisory Board meeting

3rd LinX4Rail WP2 Workshop - Definition of common data dictionary

The 24th of June 2021, this Workshop gathered 15 participants who had the occasion to get informed about the progresses regarding the development of a common data dictionary for the railway sector. Precisions were given on:
- the status of the development of the OntoRail tool, with its latest updates concerning the integration of  models coming from EULYNX and TRANSMODEL,

- the way OntoRail is functioning and how to use the new features related to establish links between models.

You can access to the material of this Workshop by clicking here.

Deliverable publication D2.2 “First Set of results of use dictionary"

This LinX4Rail deliverable aims to define the functional specification for the railway sector ontology with the intended user stories that can be grouped in two macro-categories: browsing of extracted source ontologies (single source or multiple sources) and exploring the establishment of qualified links between concepts of two or more extracted ontologies. The resulting network of ontologies would then qualify as a“dictionary”, the semantic and technical principles. This dictionary is called the "OntoRail" tool.

A particular attention was given in the import process to support the existence, in the ontology repository, of multiple versions of an extracted source ontology to enable in future iterations of OntoRail the consideration of those versions, for browsing purposes (including comparing two versions of the same extracted source ontology) as well as for the purpose of linking ontologies: it is understood that most source models will be subject to future evolutions.

Since the deliverable D2.2 is confidential, only this related News is available on the Shift2Rail website.

2nd LinX4Rail Webinar - Conceptual Data Modelling Workstream 2021-06-10

On the 10th of June 2021 was organised the 2nd LINX4RAIL Webinar about the development of the Conceptual Data Model (CDM), which will be a federation of models enabling interoperability in the data and interfaces between different digital components of the Railway System. The CDM will also facilitate interchangeability of products in the future, or even make easier introduction of new digitized subsystems.
At this occasion about 50 participants had the opportunity to be introduced to the ontologies concept as applied to Railway digital modelling.  This concept is key in building the federation of models and building links between exiting models (Rail System Model, IFC, Transmodel…) Then the progress regarding development of the ontology dictionary and the Conceptual Data modelling has been presented, followed by an overview of the Conceptual Data Modelling demonstrators.

Here is the current representation CDM Process, from source models to a specialized project specific model:

Deliverable publication D5.1 “Identification of common business objectives for the existing and future railway system”

The LINX4RAIL project aims amongst others at proposing a first railway system architecture, integrating the innovation coming from Shift2Rail (S2R) Research and Innovation activities. Managing this alignment should be performed not only according to technical aspects, but also according to business objectives.

It's in this perspective that the deliverable D5.1 “Identification of common business objectives for the existing and future railway system” has been written.

Within S2R, a process has been set up to integrate changes stemming from ongoing system architecture initiatives into relevant S2R projects. It has been agreed to consider carefully the impact of these changes (called subjects) on the businesses of the concerned stakeholders. Together with the technical assessment, the results will be used to control the integration of these subjects into S2R. Considering EC policy targets for railways formulated in the Sustainability and Smart Mobility Strategy [COM(2020) 789 final] and together with the individual business objectives of all stakeholders, the shared business objectives have been identified. These are called Common Business Objectives

You will be able to consult the deliverable D5.1 by clicking here.
